Resume Redo
Now that you’ve created your list of qualifications that make up your dream job, it’s time to ensure your resume shows that you are their dream candidate. Your resume should paint a picture demonstrating how your work history and education align perfectly for the job you’re applying for. With that in mind, it’s important to ensure that you have a different resume for the different types of roles you’re going after and they demonstrate the skills and results the hiring manager would be looking for. The average hiring manager spends about 30 seconds reviewing each resume they receive, which means you have a brief moment to catch their attention and ensure they are intrigued enough to setup a phone call. Additionally a lot of larger companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter out resumes that don’t align before a human lays eyes on them, so your resume has to be crafted to captivate the human reading it and pass the ATS test!
If you have not had your resume professionally created, it may be time to do so. Especially if you are struggling to get to the phone screen stage in the application process. If you are putting in application after application and getting zero traction, there may be something wrong! Below are some key things to keep in mind when crafting your resume to avoid the big issues I see in my day-to-day as an HR Professional.
Obvious misspelling of words, formatting issues, or disorganized flow of events
Lack of quantitative data and results
Using paragraphs instead of bullet points - you want it to be as easy to read as possible
Work history that is completely irrelevant to the title or industry being applied to
Short tenure at multiple organizations
